Gabrielle Xo films herself at home

Gabrielle Xo sets up her own camera and strips out of what she is wearing before anything else happens. Clothes go first, then her hands, then a toy she keeps within reach. The framing is tight and a little off-centre, the way self-shot footage usually is, and she nudges it back into place whenever she moves.

Nothing has been dressed for a studio, which is half the appeal. Her attention stays on herself rather than on the lens, and the masturbation that follows the strip carries that same private quality: unperformed, held steady, allowed to run its course without a single glance for approval.
